Challenge

Right now, 663 million people on the planet don't have access to clean, safe drinking water. That means that 1 out of ever 11 people in the world struggles every day to find clean water for drinking, for cooking, for bathing, and for a variety of other things.

Solution

Can you imagine waking up and not having clean water to drink? To brush your teeth? Or to take a bath? Clean water is one of our most basic and important needs. When people have access to clean water, they are healthier. They are able to go to work and to school; and they are able to grow stronger, smarter and healthier. Help the 663 million people around the world get access to clean water.

Long-Term Impact

Think of the impact that clean water had on Spontania? It helped Samoa and Jose go to school every day. It stopped mothers and daughters from walking far distances every day to find and carry back water (water that sometimes wasn't even clean.) It helped bring Spontania to life and it made the whole community healthier. Having access to clean water nearby worked for Spontania. Imagine what it can do for other villages like Spontania around the world, who are looking for ways to get their own water.

Challenge

3 million girls across India are out of school, and the female literacy rate is only 61%. In Rajasthan, only 18.5% children in Grade 3 can read words, 14.6 % of them can do a subtraction and only 39.3% children in Class 5 can read a grade 2 text. Educate Girls (EG) works towards holistically tackling issues at the root of gender inequality in India's educational system.

Solution

In order to improve learning levels (numeracy and literacy), curriculum is implemented in schools for children in grade 3, 4 and 5. The curriculum is implemented with the use of specially designed kits called Gyan ka Pitara (GKP). The learning tools focus on building micro-competencies in English, Hindi and Math. Each kits contains over 250 worksheets/child, ensuring no child is left behind. While designing the kits, the needs of the most marginalized children have been taken into account.

Long-Term Impact

Classroom transactions play an important role in retaining. Since inception (2007) we have improved learning levels of over 600,000 children. In the long term, empowering and educating children and especially girls' yields positive returns to the families, societies and communities, both now and for generations to come. The learning kits will build micro-competencies for children in literacy and numeracy. It helps in grade gain of the children along with improving retention of children in school.

Children will learn that education and team sports can help their social attitudes towards working together for the betterment of selves and their community. Education coupled with the sport of basketball promote collaboration, teamwork, and critical thinking-all skills needed for 21st century success.

Long-Term Impact

The program is designed to provide school supplies, basketball, and life skills to over 500 youth throughout the year. this program will provide students with skills needed to become model citizens who can make a positive impact on their community. Additionally, the program will help build positive relationships amongst parents, communities, and schools. The program will also expose kids to academic institutions with the possibility of earning an academic or sports scholarship.
